The organization, Autism Speaks, defines autism as "a general term used to describe a group of complex developmental brain disorders known as Pervasive Developmental Disorders." There are other pervasive developmental disorders that are not otherwise specified, which are Asperger's Syndrome, Rett Syndrome and Childhood Disintegrative Disorder. Medical professionals may refer to this group of disorders as Autism Spectrum Disorders.

It is estimated that 1 in 110 children in the USA have an autism spectrum disorder with an estimated 1.5 million people in the USA who are affected by autism. Boys are more often diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder at a rate of 3 to 4 times more. In the USA, it is estimated that 1 in 70 boys is diagnosed with autism.
